Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe (born May 6, 1983) is an American actress who made her acting debut in the 2009 film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire, a role that garnered her a nomination for a Best Actress Academy Award.
Sidibe, born in Brooklyn, New York, was raised by her mother in Bedford Stuyvesant. Her mother, Alice Tan Ridley, is an R&B and gospel singer, and her Senegal-born father, Ibnou Sidibe, is a cab driver. She has attended several New York City area colleges: Borough of Manhattan Community College, City College of New York, and Mercy College.
In Precious, Sidibe plays the central character, Precious, a physically and sexually abused sixteen-year old with a four year old child by her own father and another one on the way. The film won numerous awards, including a Golden Globe Award and Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Award.
